Akeel's In the process of Reading Review on The Storm Runner

The Storm Runner is a novel by J.C. Cervantes that was published in 2018. I first discovered the book in the summer of 2023 and am over halfway done with the book. If I had to summarize this book, I would say "The Storm Runner follows a 14-year-old boy named Zane who lives next to a volcano in New Mexico and only has one leg that is fully grown. He figures out he might release an evil god so he decides to stop him."

The longer detailed version is "One night he sees a weird creature crashing into the volcano in his backyard. He goes to investigate and doesn't find much but weirdly the next day girl named Brooks a Nawal (Shapeshifter) shows up at his house and tells him he is in danger and that he might free Ah-Puch the god of the dead. Zane thinks that she is crazy but is also wondering if the prophecy she was telling him might connect to why he has a missing leg and hasn't seen his father. Sure enough, Brooks and his dog Rosie check out the volcano only for Rosie to get killed and sent to the underworld and Brooks to almost drown. To save Brooks Zane makes a deal with Ah-Puch to become his minion and free him if he saves Brooks and brings Rosie back. Ah-Puch then agrees but only brings back Brooks and in a couple of days Zane will become a soldier of the underworld. Zane and Brooks both upset and worried decide they should go to Ah-Puch directly and try to stop him. And because Zane released Ah-Puch Brooks finds out he is a demi-god and the two go to California along with Zane's uncle Hondo to ask two warriors who have stopped Ah-Puch in the past."

The book plays out very similar to Percy Jackson just with the Mythology of Mayan gods. So far I've enjoyed and really look forward to the ending of the book. Major flaws that this book has though are how quickly everything moves and random things just pop up out of nowhere. Like random gods or people who just come to attack Zane and his friends. But, overall I would rate the book a 8.5 out of 10. It's nothing great but it is worth a look at to me. You could easily read the first 3 chapters and see if you like it and if you don't you could stop reading ahead.

  1. This review might come off as no effort because I didn't realize we had a blog due until the day before with all the time I used up being put into my essay and the revision for it.
