Skyward Book Review

A Review of Skyward, by Brandon Sanderson

Review By Andrew Langer

I first got my hands on Skyward when my mom walked past a “Little Free Library." She looked through to find books for my siblings and then handed me Skyward, I resignedly looked the book over, as usual, seeing if it was something I would bother to read. The back cover pulled me in, and I decided to give the book a chance. On the 4-hour car ride home from my grandparents I was instantly captured in Sanderson’s world of spacefaring pilots, mystery, and determination.

Skyward tells the story of Spensa, a girl living with the remainder of the humans on a desolate planet. The people settled there are constantly under attack by an alien force known as the Krell. Spensa has always wanted to be a pilot, one who defends their planet against the attacking aliens, just like her father. However, she is stopped by countless obstacles, all because of what her father supposedly did. Spensa seeks to find the truth, and what she comes upon will change her forever.

I kept reading and reading and subsequently finished the book 3 days later. It was an incredible story, with action, but also defiance against the leaders of the army, who are trying to stop her flight training. Spensa is not allowed in the complex, or to eat the food provided for the other trainees, yet she refuses to give up. She lives in defiance of the leadership, and defiance of her enemies. This tight balance will keep the reader engaged throughout the whole book.

I’d highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a science fiction novel with more depth to it than just action. 10/10, great read.

  2. Hey Andrew, awesome review. I like the prologue kind of thing you added about your mother going to the "Little Free Library". You really painted a picture in my head depicting you reading this series. I would definitely read this book and your review was a good, short summary. (By the way, you probably noticed but you spelled "would" wrong).
