Ranking the books I read this year

Hello! I'm Samuel, and today I'll be ranking the best 3 books I've read this school year, as it's soon coming to an end and we're all waiting for summer. The blog cycles were something that helped me get back into reading at least somewhat regularly. I built the habit of reading for the blogs, and would occasionally read for fun, depending on which book I was reading. So, what were these books that renewed and kept the habit of reading? Which ones did I enjoy most? Which ones had me sitting down to read the book?

#3 The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I read the Hunger Games last semester. I remember wanting to read it because I remembered watching the movie and hearing the book was better than the movie, so I decided to read the book. I thought they were both about the same, but I remember being really captivated and invested in the book when I read it. Even though there were some slight noticeable differences.

2# All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

All Quiet on the Western Front was also a book I read last semester. The story revolves around Paul, a german boy who enlists in the army to fight in the first world war. The book ranges all the way to the end of the war, on November 11th, also known as armistice day, which is the day I published the blog. I wanted to read the book because I also watched a somewhat recent film adaptation of the book, which I was able to compare the book to. I really liked a lot of aspects from the book, like character developments and plot twists, with the main character eventually dying at the end of the book.

Before I get into my favorite book of the year, I would like to talk about my honorable mention, a book I also greatly enjoyed but was not able to finish it by the due date of the blog.

The War of the Worlds by H.G Wells

The War of the Worlds is a book about a war between aliens and humans. It is a book I've been recently reading, but unfortunately was not able to finish. The book begins with the invasion of these aliens after its introduction. The characters come into interaction with the aliens, with these being hostile towards them, destroying many things, but the narrator manages to escape. The fighting escalates and soon turns into a conflict. The narrator moves away from the area, trying to avoid the aliens. I greatly enjoyed the portion of the book I read. The book, being an old classic, seems like one of the first science-fiction books to portray human-alien interaction and conflict. I've caught myself reading this book for entertainment, often trying to see what happens next. I tried reading as much as possible from this book before publishing this blog.

#1 The Militia House by John Milas

The Militia House was a book that I read this semester. The book adds a horror twist to the war book genre. The book is about a group of soldiers who go into a supposedly haunted house. After going in, they start experiencing paranormal events. This book was a different kind of war story, and also a different kind of horror story. I'm not a big fan of reading, but with The Militia House, I saw myself reading for entertainment, and just to see what would happen next. The book kept me interested until the point I finished it

Thank you for reading!

  2. Hello Samuel! When I first read the title of this blog I thought you were going to rank the blogs you read this year. When I opened the blog and saw that none of my blogs were mentioned I irrationally wrote a mean comment complaining. I deeply and humbly apologize and great job on your blog!

  3. Hi Samuel, these all sound like amazing books and you explain their story really well. Similar to Leo, I had expected this to be a ranking of blogs our read, but this seems very interesting as well. Great blog!

  4. Hi Samuel. I first thought this post was on books you planned to read and was confused to see Hunger Games and The Militia House. Hunger games is a great book and I agree that the movies and books are slightly different. As I was reading I guessed that The Militia House would top the list and I was right (self proudness!) I remember seeing you write the blog on it and how you were super excited when I asked what it was about! It is one of the books I'd like to read over the summer! Great post!

  5. Hello Samuel my favorite book out of all the ones you read this year was The Hunger Games. It's the only one I've out of all of them so that's why but I do hope you find books over the summer to talk about to us next year!
