I'm Going Back to Talking About Books: Popular Books Throughout Elementary School

Thank you for clicking on this blog post. Before discussing the fantastic books during my and hopefully your childhood, I apologize for not centralizing my recent blog posts around literature. This post is here to fix that.

To start with the Amulet series, I don't know what happened to these books. Usually, if you went to your classroom or school library, there would be one section with this whole series, and most of the books in the series weren't even there because other people had already checked them out. I remember the book's plot is about a family that moves to a new home, and the main character, a girl named Emily, finds some portal and an amulet that takes her to a fantasy and magical world where other people also have amulets. On top of that, her amulet is a jerk and tries to make her evil, kill her, or traumatize her. (I think it's undeniable I don't remember a single thing about the series)'

Next is Diary of A Wimpy Kid; I remember these books, and who doesn't? Usually, once on a random day of the year, when my family would go to Meijer or Walmart, I would see a Diary of A Wimpy Kid book, and the first thing I looked at was the expression on the main character Greg's face and the color of the book. Then my brother Amari would jump in and try to claim the book as his if our parents got it. Amari will do this very often when it comes to things he wants. He likes to claim something, get mad at me for wanting to see/use it, and never touch it again once he's done with it. But once Amari got the book, we would take them to school, and whenever we had any reading time, we would use every second of this book series. While looking up about this series, I realized it's still going, and now I'm starting to wonder when Jeff Kinney will stop writing these books.

Finally, the most legendary series of them all, Dog Man. I solely remember Dog Man because my mom would be slightly upset whenever I got these books. After all, she thought they were way too below our reading level. I can see why she thought about this. I was in my school's advanced reading group, but I still loved reading Dog Man because, at that age, we all knew those jokes had us laughing until we were dead. However, it impacted my school environment because everyone in our class would rush to get the newest Dog Man book. If you had it, people would ask you if they could borrow it for the day, and if you didn't have or read Dog Man, you were an outcast from society.

Overall, these books had some impact on my life if I remember reading them before, and if we ever do blog posts next year or in the future, I'll try to do more book reviews and what was limiting me from doing the reviews before was because being required to read every Monday isn't enough time for me to finish books fast enough for reviews. I have been spending more time reading as most of my assignments and tests are ending. Thank you for being a fantastic teacher this year, Mr. Mitchell. (Even though it isn't over)

  2. I remember Amulet being the biggest craze during elementary school, and the whole class would rush to the shelf to get the copies of the latest book. I agree with you that the blogs had an impact on my life. Great blog!

  3. Hey Akeel, this totally brings back elementary, pre-covid school memories. I remember Dog Man was huge in my class for multiple years. When our school library got new books there would often be some days where the new additions were displayed on our tables and everyone could circle around to different stations and take a look. I remember one time specifically there was a new Dog Man book and half the class was super hyped up and fighting over it. I'm not really sure why I remember this exact instance but it's definitely one of my core memories and a perfect example of how you said these books impact our lives. Nice post, thanks for sharing!

  4. Hi Akeel! Besides the Amulet series, which I did't read when I was younger, the other two books you wrote about really brought me back to grade school. Mine and your situations with reading these books seemed to have been pretty similar. Anytime I picked up books like Dog man my mom would be annoyed because she thought they were too easy. But I still read them anyway because I thought they were interesting! Thanks for your post because it really brought me back to when I was younger and just starting to get into reading. Have a great summer!

  5. Hey Akeel, I remember I used to love the Amulet series during elementary school. I also read almost all of the Diary of the Wimpy Kids books throughout elementary and middle school. Although I know they were said to be really good, I never actually read the Dog Man series, I only glanced at a few pages from my friends' books. It was nice to see how you had such fond memories of these books from when you were younger. Great blog!
